Almost ten years later, in 1977, quebec became the first jurisdiction in canada to amend its provincial charter of human rights to include sexual orientation as a prohibited ground for discrimination. In that year, the supreme court ruled that alberta’s human rights legislation must be considered to cover sexual orientation. Currently, the only provinces that explicitly include gender identity under their human rights codes are ontario, manitoba, nova scotia and the northwest territories, although other provinces have ruled that it is a protected ground under existing legislation.
