2017 Audi A5 And S5 Sportback Range Revealed Ahead Of Paris Debut

Audi has peeled back the covers on its 2017 A5 Sportback range, including the performance oriented S5 Sportback, ahead of the new hatchback’s public reveal at the Paris Motor Show.

Like the A5 Coupe and S5 Coupe that were revealed in June, the Sportback variants evolve the styling themes of the outgoing model, wearing the same new face as the two-door cars, with a deeply creased “wave-pattern” feature line running high along the body sides.

Described by Audi as providing the style of a coupe and the functionality wagon, the first generation A5 sportback pioneered the premium medium hatchback form in place of the emerging four-door coupe form.

As with the 2017 A5 Coupe, the A5 Sportback is built atop the Volkswagen Group’s modular MLB chassis architecture, and will share the coupe’s range of turbocharged four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, as well as front and all wheel drive.

Also joining the A5 range in Europe, the A5 g-tron, which is powered by a 125kW/270Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which can be fuelled by either petrol, compressed natural gas, or Audi e-gas – a sustainably produced synthetic methane.

The S5 Sportback, as the performance halo, will be powered by a 260kW 3.0-litre turbocharged V6, as well as featuring unique styling with larger front intakes, a quad-outlet exhaust, and rear lip spoiler, along with revision to the A5’s handling and braking package.

As part of the A5’s evolution the new model is larger inside and out, with a stretched wheelbase, and shorter front and rear overhangs, while sitting lower than before, as well as being slightly narrower.

The interior takes its cues from the new A4 range, with a horizontally oriented dash, high-mounted 8.3-inch infotainment screen, and optional features including Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster.

European customers will have access to the A5 Sportback range in early 2017, with an official Australian arrival date to be confirmed.
