2017 Audi A5 cabriolet and interior spy photos

The next-generation Audi A5 cabriolet, as well as the interior of the new A5 coupe, have been photographed by our spy team in Germany.

Except for the fabric roof, these first photos of the A5 convertible don’t differ to greatly from the spy photos we published of its coupe sibling back in the middle of the year.

As with the latest A4 range, Audi seems to be playing a pretty conservative hand with the A5 cabriolet’s styling. Up front there’s a new interpretation of the Audi’s single frame grille, while at the rear there’s a thin strip of LED tail-lights.

On closer inspection, the bold character line seen down the side of this prototype vehicle is made up entirely of false body panels cleverly disguised by lots of swirly camouflage.

Under the skin, the new A5 will use parts from the Volkswagen Group’s latest iteration of the MLB component matrix for longitudinal front-engine, front- and all-wheel drive vehicles.

Also used underneath the latest iterations of the A4 and Q7, MLB Evo, as its known, employs a mixture of high-strength steel and other lightweight materials that should help the new A5 shed between 90 and 110 kilograms of weight.

Drivetrains will be shared largely with the A4 range, which features petrol engines that start with a 110kW/250Nm 1.4-litre unit and currently end with the 260kW/500Nm 3.0-litre V6 that’s used in the S4.

Our photographers also managed to nab photos of the new A5 coupe’s interior, which looks to be taken almost entirely from the related A4 sedan and wagon.

The new A5 convertible is expected to begin production either towards the tail end of 2016 or at the beginning of 2017.
