2017 Audi SQ2 spied

The Audi SQ2 has been spotted out on the Nurburgring Nordschleife with just a little bit of tape over its rear badge.

With the Q2 launched in March, although not yet in showrooms, Audi’s engineers are already hard at work on a faster and sportier version of the brand’s smallest SUV.

Rumour has it that the SQ2 will have the S3’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet. If true, power output will likely be around the 230kW mark. As usual, all-wheel drive will be standard.

Up front, the the SQ2 has a different grille with rectangular slats, and a revised lower fascia with larger air intakes and a very strong horizontal theme.

Side on we can see that in addition to colour-coded sills, the SQ2 rides on large alloy wheels with low profile tyres. The SQ2 also sits a little lower to the ground than less powerful Q2 variants.

At the rear, there’s a modified diffuser-style element flanked by a pair of dual exhaust tips on both sides. This prototype’s blacked out detailing is likely to be part of its disguise.

Australia

The Audi SQ2 may be unveiled as early as this year’s Paris motor show, which takes place at the beginning of October. Even with a 2016 reveal, the SQ2 probably won’t head into showrooms until after Q2 shipments begin.

With the Q2 slated to go on sale in Europe in late 2016, Australian sales are pencilled in for the first quarter of 2017. This means that the SQ2 may arrive down under around the midway point of next year.
