And the Winner Is…No Longer the VW Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI

Green Car Journal has taken back the awards given to the VW Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI in light of the #Dieselgate scandal. Yet, the Audi USA president in effect said, “Meh, we win hundreds of these things.” [That may not be a direct quote.]

Volkswagen has admitted to falsifying emission testing results on more than 11 million vehicles. An independent investigation showed the vehicles passing the test, while in reality they exceeded standards by as much as 40 times acceptable levels.

“Rescinding the Green Car of the Year awards for the VW Jetta TDI and Audi A3 TDI is unfortunate but appropriate,” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal and in a news release.

Audi USA President Scott Keogh told the Los Angeles Times in a statement, “Audi has won hundreds of races and thousands of awards throughout its history. But we only want to win fair and square. Therefore, in light of recent developments, we believe the only right thing to do is to return this important recognition of environmental stewardship.”

In spite of having to give back these awards, Volkswagen managed to come out ahead in September sales. However, Jetta sales were down significantly. That could be part due to Volkswagen suspending sales of all diesel products after the emissions scandal broke.

Even the Audi A3 managed to eke out a sales bump year-over-year. Audi doesn’t break sales figures down by diesel vs. gas engines.
