German customers might be pleased to find their lust for horsepower and crossover bodies can be mitigated by the newly introduced and feistier SQ5 TDI with “plus” moniker – but they also have to like diesel powerplants.

We have hot hatchbacks so why not coin the term “hot-crossover” for posterity since the automakers are delivering such feisty models for quite some time now. One such example in the growing niche is the SQ5 TDI that has now received a “plus” variant that brings the total horsepower count to 340 PS. The SQ5 TDI was first introduced back in 2012 as a powerful crossover with a diesel heart that used a twin-turbo 3.0-liter TDI delivering 313 PS (230 kW) and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque. The plus version now ups the ante on the same six banger that comes with 340 PS (250 kW) and 700 Nm (517 lb-ft) courtesy of a higher injection pressure. Interestingly, the German “plus” edition makes the crossover even more powerful than a limited-series 326 PS SQ5 Competition introduced not long ago in Spain – maybe national pride has something to do here.

On the other hand, horsepower count seems to be the only bragging right for the “plus” specification as the increased power has not yielded better performances: the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) time is the same 5.1 seconds as before and the maximum speed remains electronically-limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). Being a diesel we have frugal mileage: 6.6 liters / 100 km (35.6 mpg). There’s an updated quattro all-wheel drive system that for the first time has a sport differential at the rear axle.

Visual cues include glossy black 21-inch Audi Sport alloys, an extended glossy black visual package to also cover the door handles, side mirror caps, diffuser and the roof edge spoiler. There is also a menacing quad exhaust and inside we can find Nappa leather upholstery with silver diamond pattern. An Audi exclusive selection covers 100 units and comes with a macaw blue paint job and interior matching stitching. The base price for the new Audi SQ5 TDI plus goes from 67,700 euros in Germany and the latter package will have customers shell out some extra 12,000 euros.
