Audi Q8 Edges Closer To Production With Detroit-Bound Concept

The “near-production” ready concept provides a clear taste of what we can expect of the upcoming SUV-coupe.

Green-lit for production at the end of 2014, stylish SUV buyers have waited patiently for the Audi Q8 to be unveiled. And it appears the wait is almost over. At the 2017 Detroit Motor Show, Audi will pull the wraps off the Audi Q8 concept, teased today with a pair of artistic sketches. Described as a “near-production study,” the Q8 will blend the svelte lines of a coupe with the cavernous interior of a large SUV. “With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line.

“Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige,” declared Audi Head of Design Marc Lichte. “What’s more, we believe an important aspect of this showcar is that it offers a spacious interior with four equally comfortable seats, even with the flat roof line.” The front-end shot of the Q8 concept reveals an imposing face, with Audi’s enlarged Singleframe grille sporting six pairs of vertical slats. Design cues from the 1980’s Audi Ur-quattro include extremely flat and wide C-pillars, and flared, beefed-up wheel arches housing a monster set of alloys. While there’s no specific mention of the powertrain, ‘e-tron’ is stamped along the front bumper indicating the Q8 concept will be all electric.

We suspect that Audi will also use the concept to showcase its laser light technology, recently revealed on a special-edition R8 at the LA Auto Show.

Looking at the side profile image, the raked roofline doesn’t appear to be as dramatic as other crossover-coupes like the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe, but the four-door coupe design will be more obvious when compared to the Q7 on which it’s based. When the Audi Q8 goes into production proper in 2018/2019, and certainly no later than 2020, expect to find a state-of-the-art cabin with an all-digital instrument cluster and very few conventional controls, packing the same cutting-edge tech as the imminent Audi A8.
