The long wait is nearly over, and I’m not talking about Captain America: Civil War finally arriving in theaters on May 6th. No, I’m referring to the painful amount of time that the Audi faithful have waited for a performance variant of the Q7, and that time coming to an end with the arrival of the 2017 Audi SQ7.
Available as of last month in ‘ye olde country, the 2017 SQ7 sports a nifty hybrid electric-diesel motor, that gives the seven seater 664 lb-ft of torque, roughly the same amount of shove from the Hulk’s pinky finger. All that twist comes courtesy of two turbochargers, and for the first time ever in a production car, an electric supercharger. The nitty gritty of how this system works is rather complicated, but all you really need to know is that it virtually eliminates turbo-lag by employing a supercharger that can deliver full boost without any engine power.
The latest ad spot/teaser trailer for Civil War puts the Audi SQ7 front and center. With Captain America behind the wheel and Black Panther giving chase, it puts a somewhat comical ironic twist on this product placement—considering Captain America’s sole purpose in life was to kill Nazis.
Nevertheless, the SQ7 is the real star here. While BMW and Mercedes have offered their faithful buyers tuned up SUVs for nearly a decade, Audi withheld from even building an SQ7 during the initial run of their largest SUV. Could it have been pressure from Porsche to stay off the Cayenne’s lawn? Perhaps, but that doesn’t matter now, because the SQ7 is now a thing, and hopefully it’ll be a thing we can get here in the United States.
