Guess Which Special Edition Audi Will Bring Laser Headlights To The US?

Because who doesn’t want lasers in their headlights?

Even though the novelty of lasers usually wears off after a childhood full of pointing at the neighbors through their windows to scare them (what, no one else did that?) or having the family pet chase the red dot around, there’s still something alluring to the sci-fi technology. Maybe it’s because the Jedi’s of Star Wars used laser-like light sabers to fight an army that used laser cannons and guns, but in either case, little sounds more appealing then having them in our cars. Thanks to Audi, that’s now a possibility.

That’s because the automaker is bringing something special to the LA Auto Show, a highly exclusive R8 V10 Plus dubbed the Exclusive in case you didn’t get the point. The technology is nothing new for Audi. It previously built the R8 LMS (short for Le Mans) to celebrate its victory at the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. That car featured laser headlights and was only limited to 24 units, all sold in Germany. Then BMW came and conquered the US with the first DOT approved laser headlights available as a $6,300 option on the i8. Audi, however, won’t sit by and watch its fellow countryman beat it at a game of futurism. It was this motivation that led the Four Rings to hit Geneva and then LA with the R8 V10 complete with laser headlights embedded in its eyes.

These are made up of four high intensity laser diodes in each headlight that shoot a beam of blue laser light into a phosphor converter, which converts the blue light into a bright white shine. These lasers serve as the high beams and greatly amplify the level of road in front that the driver can see. Unfortunately, the special R8, which also includes 20 inch rims, a Quantum Grey paint job, a carbon fiber side blade with a Solar Orange stripe to compliment, and an Alcantara headliner among other things, is limited to 25 units. At least it made it to the US this time. If you want one, call your bank and make sure you have a $229,200 cash reserve.
