New cars for 2016: SUVs and MPVs

In 2016, the SUV segment is expected to see a number of launches, from mainstream models like the Tata Nexon and Hexa, new Toyota Innova, Ford Endeavour to more premium offerings such as the Mercedes GLS, Range Rover Evoque convertible and the Jeep range. Featured here are the SUVs and MPVs expected to head to our shores soon.

Mahindra XUV100

Mahindra is gearing up to bring its first compact crossover to the market. Dubbed XUV100, it will use a monocoque, front-wheel-drive chassis like the XUV500 and that means better packaging and more cabin space. It will also get a new set of 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines, with an AMT gearbox option available.  Inside, the car will come with a bench seat at the front, effectively making it a six-seat vehicle. Expected to be priced from around Rs 4 lakh, it will take on mainstream hatchbacks like the Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat and Maruti Celerio, but will have the unique positioning of a pseudo-crossover in this class.

It is a big departure for Mahindra, but then so was the now-popular XUV500.

Maruti YBA

Maruti’s compact SUV, (codename: YBA), will be the company’s first entrant in this segment. The YBA will be a sub-four-metre SUV with looks heavily inspired from the new Suzuki Vitara SUV sold overseas. The YBA is said to pack in a hoard of features and equipment to challenge the current segment leader, the Ford EcoSport. The car will likely be powered by the Baleno’s 1.2-litre petrol engine with perhaps the Ertiga’s 1.4-litre unit as an option for a bit more pep. And, of course, there will be the ubiquitous 1.3-litre Multijet diesel. Maruti has never fared too well with its premium SUVs, and that continues with the S-cross, but with a knockout price, the YBA could be the one to change that.

Coming: Mar 2016

Est price: Rs 7-12 lakh

Engine(s): 1.2 P, 1.4 P, 1.3 D

Rivals: Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300

Tata Nexon

The Tata Nexon concept from the 2014 Auto Expo is likely to see production by the end of 2016. The sub-four-metre compact SUV will aim straight for the Ford EcoSport which has ruled the roost for quite some time now. The Nexon will be based on a slightly modified X1 platform, which also underpins the Bolt and Zest. Powering the car will be Tata’s new 1.5-litre diesel engine with 110bhp alongside a 1.2-litre petrol motor. Will Tata actually retain the concept’s design cues? Only time will tell.

Coming: End 2016

Est price: Rs 7.5-9 lakh

Engine(s): 1.2 P, 1.5 D

Rivals: Ford EcoSport, Mahindra TUV300

Renault Duster facelift

The ever so capable Duster was starting to show its age against freshened-up rivals, most importantly, the Hyundai Creta. Time for a mid-life spruce up. The changes on the Duster are mostly cosmetic, both on the outside and the interiors, save for the inclusion of an AMT. With the Scorpio being the only other 4×4 in the competition, the Duster could be very well ready to reprise the top-spot in its competition.

Coming: Jan 2016

Est price: Rs 9-14 lakh

Engine(s): 1.6 P, 1.5 D

Rivals: Hyundai Creta, Nissan Terrano, Maruti S-Cross

SsangYong Tivoli

Undeterred by the at best average response to the SsangYong Rexton, Mahindra will introduce the Korean brand’s aggressively designed Tivoli SUV, given the steadily growing Indian appetite for rugged- looking vehicles. In true Korean style, the car comes feature-packed. That along with the Tivoli’s contemporary looks, and the option of a 4×4 variant should be sufficient reason to give the Renault Duster and gang something to worry about. To keep prices low, Mahindra could offer the Tivoli with its TUV300’s 1.5-litre diesel engine. In markets abroad, the car is powered by a 1.6-litre, 126bhp, petrol engine. Transmission options include six-speed manual and automatic units. The Tivoli is expected to make for a strong value-for-money proposition.

Coming: End 2016
