Audi has taken the wraps off its R8 open top version during the New York International Auto Show, packing under the hood the mighty V10 gasoline engine.

We already saw how the R8 V10 Spyder looks like thanks to spy shots that caught the model without any sort of camouflage, but it’s always better to see it in the metal in a glamorous situation such as the American show. Audi’s main focus on the open-top derivation was keeping the weight in check so they decided to go for a lightweight cloth hood that is actuated via an electro-hydraulic mechanism. It will open and close the fabric roof in 20 seconds up to a speed of 31 miles per hour (50 kilometers per hour) and the vehicle is tipping the scales at just 3,553 pounds (1,612 kilograms).

The motivation is derived from the well known 5.2-liter V10 naturally aspirated petrol engine coming with 540 horsepower (397 kilowatts) and 398 pound feet (540 Newton meters) of torque at 6,500 rpm. This suffices for a 0-62 miles per hour (0-100 kilometers per hour) sprint in 3.6 seconds and a maximum speed of 197.6 mph (318 km/h). The fuel efficiency has also been improved through the use of a freewheeling mode, with the R8 coasting with the engine decoupled. This grants it a rating of 20.1 US miles per gallon (11.7 liters per 100 kilometers) with corresponding CO2 emissions of 277 grams per kilometer. The quattro AWD system is linked to a seven-speed automatic gearbox with two clutches.
