NY LIVE: 2017 Audi R8 Spyder [Video]
Audi has introduced the topless version of the second-generation R8 at the New York Auto Show.
Like the fixed-roof model, the R8 Spyder is powered by a naturally-aspirated 5.2-liter V10 engine that makes 540 horsepower and 398 lb-ft. of torque. The 10-cylinder sends the R8 from zero to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, and on to a track-ready top speed of nearly 200 mph. Surprisingly, the R8 Spyder manages to return about 20 mpg in a mixed European cycle.
The V10 sends power to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission controlled by shift paddles, and Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system.
The cloth soft top weighs nearly 100 pounds, and it can be opened or closed in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph. When closed, the top flows into a pair of fins that emphasize the R8’s long deck lid. It’s available in red, black, or brown.
Top aside, the R8 Spyder is identical to the 2017 R8 coupe that was presented last year in Geneva. Its front end is characterized by a wider rendition of Audi’s trademarked Singleframe radiator grille with honeycomb inserts, angular headlights, and a deep bumper with two large air ducts. Out back, it gets a pair of thin, elongated tail lamps, a discreet spoiler that automatically extends, a sizable air diffuser, and two air vents that mirror the ones found up front.
The 2017 Audi R8 will on sale in the coming months. Pricing information hasn’t been published yet.
