While the Audi brand is all about luxury, people can also go for the poor man’s versions – for example the not so luxurious base version of the 2016 A4 doesn’t even have standard LED headlights.

From now on at home in Germany the entry-level 2016 Audi A4 is the A4 Sport with the underpowered 1.4 TFSI engine and a six-speed manual gearbox, which can be ordered from €32,550. The sedan with this smallish engine had been announced from the get go but of course Audi preferred to launch the higher-powered models first – and the powertrain comes directly from the A3, complete with power levels: 150 hp and 250 Nm, though in this case it sits inside the engine bay in a longitudinal position. This will be the smallest engine to be used on a model that is underpinned by the MLB Evo platform and has arrived in lieu of the previous 1.8 TFSI unit, complete with power downsize.

The main claim for Audi now will remain the fact that is has been able to save up to 120 kilograms compared to the outgoing model – with the manual transmission the base A4 will only weigh 1,395 kilograms. Performance wise this A4 is not really up to snuff: 0 to 100 km/h is done in 8.7 seconds and the top speed is 210 km/h. The 2.0 TDI also delivers better mileage and is even quicker – the sprint is handled in 8.4 seconds and the maximum speed stands at 220 km/h. The entry-level A4 is also offered in Great Britain, where in the SE trim will set back prospective owners £25,900.
