Report – Audi’s upcoming new generation A1 to increase the upscale impression image
Following the mid life-cycle refresh that was presented late in 2014, the smallest Audi out there – the A1 – is quickly approaching the generational change, and it appears the successor will increase the premium feeling.
Seat’s production facility in Spain is rumored to handle production of the new generation A1, with the new hatchback looking to be even more assertive in the crazy automotive world and attract a wide range of customers by deploying a vast array of high-tech features. Coming out most likely as a 2018 model, the Audi A1 is also said to become even more upscale in a bid to avoid cannibalization with the rest of the VW AG’s small class participants. This is needed because the next A1 will cross-share the small version of the MQB architecture that is also set to underpin the new generation VW Polo and Seat Ibiza. The main dimensions will not change too much, but the new platform comes with a longer wheelbase – meaning more space inside, especially in the back.
The driver could also expect things such as the Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster or the latest version of the MMI infotainment system, while overall materials should deliver a better impression of a true Audi. Powertrains include a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder in multiple guises, as well as a 1.5 liter declined in both petrol and diesel form. There will also be a new S1 high performance version, but no plans have been issued for a hardcore RS1.
