Spied: 2018 Volkswagen CC
Spies have caught Volkswagen’s four-door Passat coupe testing in Death Valley, showing off the lines of the next-generation car under heavy camo.
The new CC was expected to draw heavily from the Sport Coupe GTE concept Volkswagen showed in Geneva last year. The concept borrowed a bit from VW Group’s upmarket Audi brand, especially in the rear, where A5 and A7 design elements work their way into the fender and c-pillar lines.
It’s hard to tell whether those exterior details made it into the 2018 CC’s design given how extensively it is disguised. The sharp crease along the concept’s flanks are visible, though possibly a bit subdued compared to those found on the show car. A less aggressive take on the concept’s headlamps is also visible under all the vinyl.
One thing seems obvious from these shots: The aggressive integrated rear spoiler of the Sport Coupe GTE concept did not make the final cut, along with the rest of the “stepped” rear design details.
We also have a glimpse of the car’s interior, though given the striking similarity to the existing model’s dash, we can’t determine whether it is actually new or simply a carry-over for chassis/powertrain development purposes.
Under the skin, the new CC will ride on Volkswagen’s MQB modular architecture for the first time. Look for more information to come out in the coming months, as a production CC model will likely make its debut during this year’s auto show circuit.
