[Video] 2017 Audi R8 Sypder caught testing on the Nurburgring image
The second generation R8 supercar has been introduced early this year and has had its time to entice fans and Audi customers, and the Ingolstadt-based manufacturer is hard at work developing its open top companion.
The latest spy activity shows the 2017 R8 Spyder hard at work on the “green hell” of the Nurburgring circuit as the model prepares to have all its issues fixed before the expected sales start date – most likely set for summer of next year. Naturally, the Spider’s second generation follows the design lines of the coupe – and we can tell you that despite its heavy camouflage. The upcoming owners will do get a retractable fabric top, a ventilated engine cover and a more upright rear windscreen. Other changes should be fairly limited and we could actually just see the addition of the necessary switches to open and close the roof.
The coupe makes do with a powertrain that uses the updated V10 5.2-liter after they axed the 4.2 V8 mill. We thus expect the Spyder to come in the same two power configurations of 540 HP & 540 Nm for the “entry-level” model and then jump to 610 HP and 560Nm for the Plus version. The coupe accelerates to 62 mph (100 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds and has a top speed of 200 mph (320 km/h) or can sprint 0.3 seconds faster and climb to 205 mph (330 km/h) in the Plus version. There’s also that electric R8 e-tron that makes do with 62 HP & 920 Nm and a 450 km (279 miles) range. It jumps from 0 to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a limited max speed of 155 mph (250 km/h). We’re pretty sure about the V10 in Sypder configuration but won’t bet on the latter, though it would be highly interesting to see an utterly silent open top supercar eerie sprinting towards the horizon.
